IRS Tax Relief and Extension for Hurricane Sandy Victims

The IRS announced yesterday that it?s giving taxpayers and tax preparers affected by Hurricane Sandy some tax relief: a one week extension until November 7 to file returns and make payments normally due on October 31.

This IRS tax help is aimed at business owners and their tax preparers whose payroll and excise tax returns were due on October 31 and who were ?in an area affected by Hurricane Sandy or otherwise impacted by the storm.?

The announcement states the IRS intends to grant additional filing and payment relief as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issues more disaster declarations

This IRS relief is automatic; no action is required by the taxpayer. However, because these payments and filings were due yesterday, taxpayers and preparers need to know that if they receive a penalty notice for this period (which they may), they will want to avoid payroll tax problems and contact the IRS number on the notice immediately to request penalty abatement for reasonable cause due to the storm.

The IRS will be posting more details on the Tax Relief in Disaster Situations page on IRS.gov.
