The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network will hit its 400th market on Oct. 18 and it will be bringing this high-speed network to 30 more markets by the end of the year, said CTO Nicola Palmer during an event at MobileCon.
Verizon announced its 4G LTE rollout plans in 2012 and it will soon have 75 percent of the U.S. population covered. Look for it to have its 4G LTE footprint be equal to its 3G network by the end of 2013. The carrier is focused on its 4G LTE delivering at least 5-12Mbps download speeds and 2-5Mbps upload speeds.?
"4G LTE is where it is today because Verizon Wireless aggressively led the way," Palmer said.?
Verizon users are also really digging 4G LTE, Palmer said. It's already seeing 35 percent of its traffic on 4G LTE and 11 million of its 89 million post-paid customers have 4G LTE devices. Look for that number to increase now that iPhone 5?can utilize this high-speed network.?
Moving forward, Verizon said it plans to start rolling out Voice over LTE (VoLTE) toward the end of 2013 with the major push happening in 2014. Over the long run, using VoLTE could enable Verizon to use its voice network spectrum for other things.?Verizon also has a bunch of AWS spectrum, thanks to a deal it did with cable companies,?and we can expect AWS-enabled 4G LTE devices by next year.?
Big Red is definitely the leader in 4G LTE but the other carriers are finally getting in gear. The AT&T 4G LTE?is growing daily and it's been pretty fast. Sprint is in a good place when it comes to spectrum and the carrier's nascent 4G LTE network is just starting to be rolled out.?
The potential merger of T-Mobile and MetroPCS?is also all about 4G LTE, as the combined carrier will have the spectrum to deploy a high-speed network in most of the major cities in the U.S. MetroPCS already has a 4G LTE network in a few major cities and it is rapidly moving to get rid of its CDMA-based 3G network in favor of an HSPA+ one.?
